R.I.P. TURNER

Quiles informed me that Michael Turner just passed away. I am both shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of such an amazing talent. May God be with his family and loved ones. You were an inspiration Mr. Turner. Godspeed

Yeah, it seems that most editors want to see tight pencils these days. Which is unfortunate. I always prefered doing finishes over layouts.

I'm wondering if I'm must messing myself up by trying to push a style on myself. What I feel like i'm doing is going for printable pencils before I ink, but I still prefer "defining" my pictures at the inking stage. having sketchy finished pencils I like b/c I think I can save myself time, but have you found that editors these days really, really prefer tight printable pencils before inks?

Hmmm, I don't like smudges that make the page just look messy. If they're supposed to be there as part of the artwork and look that way, OK. I would even say that I think it makes the artist seem even more capable if it DOESN"T look like he had to work too hard at it.
As far as consciously trying for a style, I try to avoid that. Sometimes though, I do try for a specific look, like the SwampThing page I did with Tom Mandrake. I was trying for a Virgil Finaly look on that one.

what i've been doing lately has been trying to get away from sketchy linework and have smooth construction, good line connection and hit all the major points that will translate well in a pose. but I find that I really don't like my "style" or finish with a smooth finish, I like things a little rough and not "messy" but I like to see some erased lines to see that I worked for what I got. i don't know what it is but I really like to see smudges and things like that on a page to see that the artist worked for it on that piece of paper instead of a "transfer" or a light box. I like that on other people's stuff but not mine, dunno why. when you're drawing do you every think or focus on "style" while you draw or do you just draw?

Yes exactly, getting good with brush or pen is ONLY a matter of doing it a lot. There are many other things to take into consideration in general artistic improvement, but linework is a practiced skill and nothing more. Linework by itself isn't even art, it's what you do with it that really counts. Sometimes rough messy linework will get the job done the best! I use sponges, towels, bits of cloth and lots of stuff to apply ink!

you're welcome, I thought it was a gorgeous piece. keep up the hard work.

I really am envious of your control over the brush, I've been practicing and I think getting a lot better in terms of control. When thing that was brought to my attention was that i'm a very impatient person and learning patience with brush and ink and art in general is the really hard part.
